Porsche 997.1 vs 997.2: a Carrera buying guide

Choosing between a Porsche 997.1 and 997.2 means comparing the engine, gearbox and individual history. The Carrera facelift introduced direct injection and PDK, while the manual remained available. Use production information and the original specification to identify a car, then assess its current condition.

When did the 997 change?

Porsche places the 997 generation between 2004 and 2012 and dates its facelift to July 2008. Enthusiasts commonly call the earlier cars 997.1 or phase 1 and the revised cars 997.2 or phase 2. Model-year conventions and first-registration dates can differ, so “2009 onward” is not a precise worldwide definition.

For a car offered from Japan, ask for its chassis number, production information, original specification and registration history. A late registration does not by itself establish which engine or gearbox was fitted at the factory. This guide focuses on the Carrera family; Turbo, GT3 and GT2 versions need their own specification checks.

Carrera engine differences

Factory-rated metric power for the core Carrera models
ModelBefore faceliftAfter facelift
Carrera / Carrera 43.6 litres, 325 PS3.6 litres, 345 PS
Carrera S / Carrera 4S3.8 litres, 355 PS3.8 litres, 385 PS

The revised Carrera engines introduced direct fuel injection. These figures are manufacturer ratings in PS, not wheel-horsepower measurements, and they do not describe GTS, Turbo or GT models.

When comparing two cars, establish the exact engine and review its maintenance and repair history. The facelift label alone cannot establish mechanical condition. Have a Porsche specialist decide which diagnostic checks are appropriate to the engine, symptoms and available records.

Manual, Tiptronic S or PDK?

The Carrera facelift replaced the optional Tiptronic S automatic with a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung, or PDK, dual-clutch transmission. A six-speed manual remained available. A phase 2 Carrera can therefore be manual; PDK is not part of the definition of every facelift car.

Choose the transmission around the way you intend to use the car, then assess its condition. For a manual, review clutch work and check operation during a proper inspection. For either automatic, request service records and assess selection and shifting both cold and warm. Controls or trim changed by a previous owner should not be used as proof of the factory transmission.

Body, lighting and cabin details

The revised Carrera received updated front lighting, LED rear lights and a newer Porsche Communication Management system. Navigation and connectivity equipment depend on specification, so check the installed functions rather than assuming every updated screen has the same features.

The facelift Carrera 4 and 4S adopted electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management four-wheel drive. Their wider rear body and reflector strip between the rear lights help distinguish them from the rear-wheel-drive Carrera versions, but photographs are a starting point, not a substitute for model identification.

For a Japan-sourced example, check the headlamps, radio, navigation language and any later replacements against your intended use and destination requirements. Obtain a clear description of what works locally before budgeting for changes.

Compare condition and ownership costs

Request an inspection covering the engine and cooling system, underbody, accident repairs, suspension, brakes, tyres and fitted electronics. On a Cabriolet, include the roof operation and seals. Review invoices for dates and mileage, and ask the inspector to distinguish current faults from maintenance that will be due soon.

Keep purchase price, immediate work and longer-term maintenance in the same comparison. A well-documented earlier Carrera and a later car with unresolved faults should not be assessed on the facelift label alone. Decide first whether you want rear- or four-wheel drive, which body style and which transmission; then compare the examples that satisfy those choices.

Share your preferred Carrera version, manual or automatic gearbox, steering side, destination and total budget. If you have found a car, send the advert and available records so the review starts with that individual specification.
