Why keep a car in Japan?

Buying a car and exporting it immediately are separate decisions. You may want to coordinate a later shipment, complete agreed work before departure, or explore whether a visit to Japan could include using your own car. Start by identifying the purpose of the stay and an approximate duration.

If your plan depends on the vehicle becoming eligible for import at a later date, establish that eligibility with the relevant destination authority before buying. Age is only one possible requirement. Storage should support a realistic import plan, with a budget for the time between purchase and shipment.

Confirm the storage arrangement

Ask for a written proposal identifying:

• The location, storage type, intended dates and vehicle acceptance conditions.
• The storage charge, payment schedule and any minimum period or notice requirements.
• What checks are included, their frequency and how updates will be provided.
• How additional work is authorised and charged.
• Access, collection, transport and release arrangements.

Also request the applicable custody and insurance terms. Do not infer cover for every type of loss from words such as “secure” or “stored”.

Record condition and agree the care plan

Create a clear starting record: dated photographs, odometer reading, supplied keys, accessories and known faults. Keep this with the purchase paperwork. It gives both parties a reference when work is requested or the vehicle leaves storage.

Discuss the car’s actual needs with the workshop, including its battery, tyres, fluids, existing leaks and any modifications. Ask what is included and what requires a separate estimate. Avoid treating a generic maintenance list as proof that every task will be performed. Agree who approves expenditure and what happens if a new issue is found.

Planning to drive during a visit

Prepare for the eventual shipment

Before ending storage, review the destination requirements again and agree any final inspection or work. Confirm the export documents, shipping method, booking status and handover record. Ask how storage charges are handled if a sailing changes.

Keep vehicle preparation, freight and destination registration visible as separate parts of the project. A target shipping date helps planning, but it should be updated against the actual booking and the vehicle’s readiness.
