NISMO 400R: specifications, originality and buying checks

The NISMO 400R is more than a modified R33 GT-R. Its RB-X GT2 engine, chassis and body changes form a specified complete-car package. This guide separates period specifications from the identity, originality and condition you need to verify on an individual car.

A NISMO complete car

NISMO describes the 400R as a complete-car programme developed from the R33 Skyline GT-R. Its significance lies in the specified combination of components, rather than a power figure or a body kit considered separately.

The original programme page advertises a limit of 99 vehicles. That is evidence of the announced limit, not a confirmed count of cars ultimately completed. A final production total should not be presented as established without a source that actually records it.

For a prospective purchase, identifying the individual vehicle is more useful than repeating an unsourced rarity number. Ask how its connection to the original NISMO programme is documented and what has changed since completion.

RB-X GT2: more capacity and 400 PS

The RB-X GT2 displaces 2,771 cc, compared with the standard RB26DETT’s 2,568 cc. NISMO specifies 400 PS at 6,800 rpm, N1-specification metal turbo turbines, a dedicated engine-control unit and a titanium exhaust. It also lists additional oil cooling.

These are period factory specifications for the complete car. They should not be confused with a current dynamometer result or assumed to describe a car that has since received another engine, turbo system or calibration. Request records of engine work and identify the components actually fitted.

What changed beyond the engine?

NISMO retained the standard FS5R30A manual transmission while specifying a twin-plate clutch and carbon propeller shaft. The equipment list includes ATTESA E-TS Pro and active rear differential control.

The chassis package combines Bilstein dampers, NISMO springs and a 30 mm reduction in ride height. Wider bodywork accommodates 18-inch wheels with 275/35 tyres. The Brembo brake hardware is listed as standard GT-R equipment, supplemented by NISMO pads and a master-cylinder stopper; describing it simply as a wholly new larger brake system is inaccurate.

The carbon LM bonnet, wider arches, aerodynamic parts and cabin details provide further comparison points. The original instrument scales extend to 320 km/h and 11,000 rpm. Those printed endpoints are not a verified top speed or engine redline.

Build a record of originality

Separate the car’s identity from the originality of its present parts. A genuine complete car may have received replacement components, while a conventional R33 can acquire distinctive external parts. Neither question is settled by a badge photograph.

  • Identity: request the chassis details and any original purchase, build or NISMO-related documentation supporting the car’s history.
  • Engine: document identification markings and workshop records; establish whether the engine and its specification have changed.
  • Body and cabin: compare the bonnet, aero parts, wheels, seats, trim and instruments with the period equipment list.
  • Changes: distinguish maintenance replacements, restoration and later performance modifications, with invoices where available.

If a seller’s description leaves a gap, make that a specific question for the inspection. A detailed answer is more useful than assuming every visible branded component confirms the entire car.

Assess condition and the work required

Arrange a specialist inspection covering structure, corrosion, repairs, engine condition, cooling, clutch, gearbox, differentials and suspension. Check that the fitted control systems operate correctly and investigate warning lights. Document underside condition and any evidence of contact affecting the lower bodywork.

For damaged or missing model-specific parts, establish a realistic repair or replacement plan before purchase. An inspection should identify what is present, what requires attention and which points remain unverified.

Decide whether your priority is preservation, use or a car with documented later changes. That decision affects which compromises are acceptable, but it does not replace the need for a clear history and a maintenance budget. The strongest purchase file connects the car’s claimed identity, current specification and observed condition.
